Review: Pulse Of Heroes by A. Jacob Sweeny

Paperback
, 509 pages
Published October 31st 2010 by Thalamus Press

Book Description:
A suspenseful, passionate, paranormal romance that sweeps through the emotions of first love and heartache as it traverses centuries and continents.

Michelle used to feel like she was behind in everything, especially school and relationships. Her great aunt from the old country says she is like a bland meal, "no salt or pepper". But in junior year, everything changes. Her father takes a position on the Town Council, a popular boy in school becomes interested in her, and most importantly, the Hekademos Learning Center, a private school for 'troubled' students, moves into her quiet neighborhood amidst the protests of the entire town.

After an embarrassing fall over the school wall, Michelle meets Elliot and her ordinary ‘bland’ life changes its course forever.

Elliot is no ordinary human. In fact, no one at the Hekademos Learning Center is. Beautiful and fierce, they have survived throughout the millennia by weaving in and out of human events. Through them, Michelle learns that history and myths from around the world are dotted with references to their kind. Michelle falls madly in love with the ever-striking and mysterious Elliot and, as much as he tries to fight it, he develops strong feelings for her as well. Although Elliot carries numerous painful memories from his many pasts, he disregards his own better judgment and the advice of his friends, and finds himself falling for Michelle‘s offbeat personality. Their feelings grow in intensity, but when History catches up with them, the difference between their life paths threatens to destroy any future that they might have had together.

Michelle learns that there are infinite shades of gray between black and white, and has to deal with the bundle of contradictory emotions called love. She has to trust her intuition in order to face the danger and uncertainty of being drawn into Elliot’s wondrous world. Ultimately, it is up to Michelle to make the split-second, life-altering decision that will either tear them apart forever, or give them another chance.

Book Review:

I was nearly blown away by Pulse of Heroes. When I first found out about this book the cover is what caught my attention and that's fine, actually better than fine and along with the very interesting description? I was grateful when I received a review copy in the mail from the author, A. Jacob Sweeny.
Thank you.

So, I'll start with the Characters.

Michelle is the main character and in my opinion she wasn't the best choice character to represent a story like this because there's so many Michelle's in the YA fiction genre. It's discomforting and hard to read so many stories with only one type of girl over and over again. In my opinion I think it almost killed the story because Pulse of Heroes had a very interesting plot.

I don't know how else to explain but image you're favorite thing in the world slowly turn to dust by an invisible source. Or by a being you can't erase from time. That's how it felt like for me, the book was great but there was something that caused that greatness harm. A story like this comes once in a life time and I sensed the writing transform like a movie in my mind. It was a million different paths leading to something more exciting than the last. I couldn't believe how fast I read. I kind of lost track of time...literally.

But...the characters were. not. working. for. me.

Like I said, Michelle was a clock compared to what I felt for the story. And she was there all the time! Elliot was really something but I guess I couldn't quite understand how he can like any girl for that matter. He was so unique and I thought he deserved someone out of this world-

Anyway, back to the story...

The author nailed it. I can tell how much work was put into this and nothing angers me more than the rating I'm about to give because if it wasn't for the common occurrence that swerved throughout the story, I'd have added this to my favorites.

On second thought. No rating will suffice. Pretty much the story is part 6/5 part 2/5.

  1. Wow it's the first time I see this book and yeah the cover is pretty neat! I hate books that have a great side and a not so great side I never know how to rate them. I'm a really character driven reader though so not sure I would enjoy this one. Although the plot sounds really cool. Great review.
