Kicked out for refusing to join a cult, seventeen-year-old Jamie must find a way to survive on her own

Jamie should have known something was off about the church of the Right and the Real from the start, especially when the Teacher claimed he wasn’t just an ordinary spiritual leader, but Jesus Christ, himself. But she was too taken by Josh, the eldest son of one of the church’s disciples, and his all-American good looks. Josh is the most popular boy at school too, and the first boy outside the drama geeks to give Jamie a second look. But getting her Dad involved in a cult was not part of the plan when she started dating Josh. Neither was her dad’s marriage to the fanatic Mira, or getting kicked out, or seeing Josh in secret because the church has deemed her persona non grata.

Jamie’s life has completely fallen apart. Finding her way back won’t be easy, but when her Dad gets himself into serious trouble, will Jamie be ready to rescue him, and maybe even forgive him?

Review: The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

Hardcover
, 416 pages
Expected publication: October 18th 2011 by Scholastic Press
My copy: ARC

Book Description:

It happens at the start of every November: the Scorpio Races. Riders attempt to keep hold of their water horses long enough to make it to the finish line. Some riders live. Others die.

At age nineteen, Sean Kendrick is the returning champion. He is a young man of few words, and if he has any fears, he keeps them buried deep, where no one else can see them.

Puck Connolly is different. She never meant to ride in the Scorpio Races. But fate hasn’t given her much of a chance. So she enters the competition — the first girl ever to do so. She is in no way prepared for what is going to happen
.

My Review:

Just so you know, I had attempted to read Maggies' Shiver but...am I the only one who thought it was Twilight but with Jacob/Sam getting Bella/Maggie? Well I'm not the one to judge an author by one book so I was excited to receive The Scorpio Races.

Yes. The "Scorpio" "Races"

Where was the excitement in this book? I didn't expect much in the beginning but based on the cover, the book description and the title...I had hoped for a little more than failed attempts at intense moments by yawn-worthy characters.

I wasn't into the writing either. It was too detailed and unfashionably organized.

Towards the end it got better and exciting but by then I was finished and left unsatisfied. I really hate that I didn't like this but if you like Maggies' work, go for it and give this a try, or you might like it either way. But it wasn't my kind of read.

Hey Bloggers? Wanna swap some Arcs?

Jackie from Literary Escapism has created a Goodreads group called ARC Swap.

Are you a book blogger that has an ARC that you're not sure what to do with it? How about swapping it with another blogger? In order to join the ARC Swap:

  • You must be a book blogger with a confirmed site.

  • You must be a member of Goodreads, which is completely free.

  • Only print ARCs may be swapped. Digital ARCs cannot be traded.

Then request to join ARC Swap, and once we verify that you have a site, you can start to list the ARCs you want to swap or browse the already listed ARCs and offer to swap. That’s it.
